This basic workshop is designed for library staff who are new to negotiating licenses for electronic resources. This workshop would also be beneficial to library staff who do not negotiate with vendors, but who do work with electronic resources and/or ERM systems and need to understand license terms. [Note: this is an introductory workshop and is not geared toward experienced staff who have already negotiated licenses.] 

The workshop will address the basic concepts of contract law (licenses as contracts) and offer a hands-on look at the components of a standard licensing agreement.

This workshop is very interactive. Participants are STRONGLY encouraged to join with a microphone or call in on the phone for audio so that you can participate in the conversation. This is not required, and you can still ask questions via the Chat option. However, it is strongly encouraged to ensure the best workshop experience. 

This class will be held online. All registered attendees will receive an email with login information a few days prior to the class date.

Instructor: Stephanie Davis

Stephanie D. Davis is the Group Purchasing Manager at MCLS. In this role, she oversees the purchasing of library eResources for MCLS member libraries. This involves developing new business as well as negotiating contracts and license agreements for group purchases. Stephanie’s background includes working as a Reference & Instruction Librarian at Spring Arbor University as well as at several community colleges. Prior to moving to MCLS, Stephanie served as the Library Director at North Central Michigan College in Petoskey, Michigan. Stephanie is passionate about helping libraries and their users. Since coming to MCLS, Stephanie has learned much about transformative agreements and is excited about their possibilities and the potential of open access. Her greatest joy is spending time with her family, which includes her husband, two grown daughters, and four grandchildren.
