In this two-session online workshop, participants will learn to locate quality legal resources on the World Wide Web. The class will focus on state and federal primary legal materials, as well as reliable secondary legal sources, including legal self-help websites. In addition, the lawyer-librarian instructor will discuss how the sources fit into our legal system. The special challenges presented by legal reference will be discussed, and advice given about how to avoid the unauthorized practice of law. Recommendations for inexpensive or essential print and electronic materials that might be purchased to supplement free Internet resources will also be made.

This class will be held online. All registered attendees will receive an email with login information a few days prior to the class date.

Instructor: Daryl Thompson

Daryl Thompson is a reference librarian at Michigan State University College of Law. Prior to that, he worked as an attorney at Elder Law of Michigan and research associate with the Schaefer Library at MSU College of Law. He earned his JD, magna cum laude, from MSU College of Law. He also has a MFA in Theatre and undergraduate degrees in English and Political Theory from MSU. He is pursuing his MLIS at San José State University. He teaches research as part of the Research, Writing & Analysis course. He has a particular interest in access to justice issues.
